Understanding & Using Sewing Patterns 4 week course

During the 4 weeks we will be covering a wide range of techniques on how to use downloadable PDF patterns including : -

• where to look for and how to choose downloadable sewing patterns on the internet; a bit about preprinted patterns

• downloading, printing & laying out

• how to measure yourself correctly

• taping up & sizing (including grading between multiple sizes)

• understanding pattern markings and lines

• choosing the right fabric for the job

• how to read the body and fabric measurement instructions

• pattern placement on fabric with grainlines and seam allowances

• fitting adjustments & sewing the garment following pattern instructions, to the finished piece.

At the end of the course you will take home a finished wearable garment and a good understanding of how to use sewing patterns plus many advanced sewing techniques. This takes place in our sewing studio at The Space. You can use our machines or bring your own.

Before the course starts, you will be choosing, purchasing and printing your pattern at home (or visit The Space on Tuesday afternoon for extra help) and sourcing your fabric with help and suggestions from Julia.

We can provide printing at The Space if needed at a small extra charge.

Fabrics not provided.
